A roof rack system is four things, not one: crossbars that span the roof, towers that hold the bars up, a vehicle-specific fit kit that connects the towers to your particular car, and the accessory interface on top of the bars that whatever you are carrying clamps onto. You cannot choose any of them independently. Your roof decides the towers, the towers decide the bars, and the bars decide what will attach.
That last paragraph is the whole article in miniature, and it is the part most buying guides leave out. They list the components accurately enough. What they rarely say is that the four parts resolve in a fixed order, and that starting at the wrong end of it is how people end up with a box of parts that will not go on their car.
The four parts of a roof rack system, and what each one does
Almost every roof setup on the road, from a basic pair of bars to a full expedition platform, is built from the same four elements.

Two of these are universal and two are not, which is the source of most of the confusion. Crossbars and towers are sold as product families that fit hundreds of vehicles. The fit kit is the piece that makes a generic family fit your car and nobody else's, and on many vehicles it is the part that does not exist.
The accessory interface matters more than its dull name suggests. A bike tray, a cargo box or a kayak saddle does not clamp to "a roof rack." It clamps to a bar of a particular shape with a particular channel, and that compatibility is decided the moment you buy bars.
The vocabulary problem: three brands, three names for the same part
A genuine obstacle for anyone researching this is that the industry has never agreed on what to call these parts. The same piece of metal changes name depending on whose page you happened to open, and a shopper comparing two listings often cannot tell they are looking at the same component.

None of this is deceptive. It is simply what happens when several manufacturers develop the same product category independently. But it has a practical consequence: when you search a part name and get results that look unrelated, they often are not unrelated at all. Translate the term first, then compare.
The order the decision actually resolves in
Here is the sequence. Each step removes options from the step after it, which is why the order cannot be rearranged.
- Identify your roof type. Naked, raised rails, flush rails, fixed points, track or rain gutter. This is a matter of fact about your car, not a preference.
- The roof type selects the mounting system. Towers and fit kits exist per roof type. Once step one is settled, most of the catalogue disappears.
- The mounting system selects the bars. Manufacturers pair specific bar ranges with specific towers. Mixing brands across this joint is usually not supported.
- The bars select the accessories. The bar profile and channel determine which carriers will clamp on and which will not.
The common and expensive error is starting at step three, because bars are the visible, photogenic part and the easiest thing to put in a cart. Bars bought before the roof type is confirmed are bars bought on a guess.

Step one: your roof decides the mounting system
There are six roof types in common circulation, and your car has exactly one of them.
A naked roof is smooth, with no rails and no visible attachment points. Raised rails run front to back with a visible gap underneath, so you can pass your hand between the rail and the roof. Flush rails run front to back with no gap at all and sit almost against the roof surface. Fixed points are factory threaded mounting positions, usually near the four corners, often hidden beneath a small cover or flap. A track is a channel bonded or bolted along the roof that lets you slide the towers to any position. Rain gutters are the raised channels along the roof edge found on older vehicles and many vans.
The distinction that catches people out most often is naked versus hidden fixed points. Yakima and RackWarehouse both note that a roof which looks completely bare can still have factory mounting points concealed under trim covers. A driver who concludes "naked" without checking under those covers may buy an entire clamping system when a simpler and better-rated fixed point system was available. The cost of checking is nothing. The cost of not checking is the whole purchase.
Step two: the mounting system decides the bars
Once the roof type is known, the tower and fit kit follow, and the tower brand narrows the bar choice considerably. Manufacturers engineer towers and bars as matched pairs, and while the parts may physically fit across brands, the manufacturer's load guidance and warranty are written for the combination they sold.
Bars themselves come in three broad profiles. Square bars are the traditional shape, the cheapest, the strongest for the money, and the loudest at highway speed. Round bars are an older standard still common on factory fitments. Aero bars have a wing-shaped section designed to cut wind noise and drag, and cost substantially more.
Which of those is right is a genuine question with a real answer, and it depends on how often the bars stay on the car and how much noise you are willing to live with. Step three: the bars decide what will attach to them
This is the step people discover last, usually after the carrier arrives and does not fit.
Modern aero bars typically carry a T-slot channel along the top, and many current carriers are designed to bolt directly into it. Square and round bars generally use a clamping carrier that wraps around the bar section instead. Plenty of carriers support both methods, some support only one, and some need a separate adapter kit to switch between them.
Two dimensions decide compatibility. The first is the bar's cross-section, because a clamp is cut for a shape. The second is the bar spread, the distance between the front and rear bars, since long items like cargo boxes and kayak carriers specify a minimum and sometimes a maximum spread. On raised rails and flush rails the spread is largely fixed by where the rails are. On tracks it is adjustable, which is one of the underrated advantages of a track system.
Check the accessory's stated bar requirements before buying bars, not after. It is the only way to keep step four from overruling step three.
When the honest answer is that nothing fits
This outcome exists, and you will not read it on a retailer's page, because a retailer has nothing to sell you at the end of that sentence.
Some vehicles have no supported roof rack solution at all. Panoramic and full glass roofs are the most common reason, since the load path a rack needs may not be present. Certain low-volume models and some very new releases simply have no fit kit developed yet. A small number of manufacturers state in the owner's manual that no roof load is permitted on that vehicle, and that instruction is not negotiable by fitting a rack anyway.
There is also a softer version of the same answer: a system exists, but its rated capacity is low enough that it will not carry the thing you bought it for. That is not a fit failure. It is a capacity failure, and it is why the load rating questions get their own articles in this cluster rather than a footnote here.
If a manufacturer fit guide returns no result for your vehicle, treat that as information rather than an error to work around. Improvising a mount that the vehicle maker did not provide for is how loads come off roofs.
What to check before you spend anything
Four checks, in order, none of which costs money.
Check your roof. Look for rails, and if there are rails, try to pass your hand under them. Run your fingers along the roof edge and lift any small covers near the corners. That single inspection resolves steps one and two for most people. Check the fit guide, carefully. Thule, Yakima, Rhino-Rack and the major retailers all publish one. Enter your exact year, make, model and body style. If it returns several results, they are usually different systems at different price and capacity levels rather than alternatives to pick between at random.
Check your own roof load rating. It is in your owner's manual, and it is specific to your vehicle. No figure published on any website, including this one, is your number. The rating that applies to you is the lower of what your vehicle permits and what the rack permits.
Check what you intend to carry, before you buy bars. Its bar profile and bar spread requirements are the constraint that quietly decides everything upstream.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a fit kit if my car already has roof rails? Often no. Vehicles with factory raised rails frequently take a tower that clamps directly around the rail with no separate vehicle-specific kit. Flush rails are the opposite case and usually do need a model-specific kit or adapter. The manufacturer fit guide is what settles it for your car.
Can I mix crossbars from one brand with towers from another? Physically, sometimes. Practically, it is not advisable. Manufacturers publish their load guidance and honor their warranty for the tower and bar combination they sold together, and mixing brands puts you outside both. If cost is the reason, compare complete systems rather than assembling one from parts.
What is the difference between roof rails and a roof rack? Roof rails run front to back along the roof and are usually fitted at the factory. A roof rack is the complete assembly that carries a load, including the crossbars that run side to side. Rails on their own are a mounting point, not a rack. You generally cannot strap cargo directly to rails.
My roof looks completely flat and smooth. Does that mean I cannot fit a rack? Not necessarily, and this is worth checking properly. Many apparently bare roofs have factory fixed points hidden under small covers near the corners, and a clamp-style system that grips the door frame is available for a great many genuinely naked roofs.
